Rescuing Surrendered & Abandoned Redfoot Tortoises

Torts R Us is a Florida-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit Redfoot Tortoise Sanctuary located in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

We provide a safe haven for Redfoot tortoises that are surrendered, abandoned, or in need of specialized care, while also educating the public about responsible tortoise ownership and proper care.

Our sanctuary is dedicated to giving these incredible tortoises a safe, healthy environment where they can live out their lives with proper nutrition, habitat, and veterinary support.

If you can no longer care for your Redfoot tortoise, please submit a surrender request so we can review the situation.

Torts R Us currently accepts Redfoot and Cherryhead Redfoot tortoises only. We are unable to take other tortoise or turtle species.

All surrender requests must be reviewed and approved before intake.

Need to Surrender a Redfoot Tortoise?

πŸ’” They Didn’t Ask for This β€” But They’ve Found Safety Here

Many Redfoot tortoises arrive at our sanctuary after being abandoned, neglected, or surrendered when owners are no longer able to care for them.

At Torts R Us, each tortoise receives proper nutrition, outdoor habitat, veterinary care, and a safe environment where they can live healthy lives.

With your support, we can continue rescuing and protecting tortoises that need a second chance.

🐒 Right Now - Here in the Sanctuary...

Torts R Us is an active, working sanctuary β€” not a static rescue. At any given time we care for Redfoot tortoises at every life stage, from newly hatched babies to full-grown adults.

Many tortoises arrive through surrender or rescue situations and require specialized heat, humidity, nutrition, and medical evaluation before they can safely join the sanctuary population.

Your support helps us provide the space, care, and resources these animals need to live safe and healthy lives.

🐒 Our Current Sanctuary Population

We currently care for Redfoot tortoises at many different life stages, from newly hatched babies to full-grown adults. Each tortoise is housed according to age, health, and care needs to ensure a safe environment for everyone in the sanctuary. We now have 47 Redfoot Tortoises here now.

πŸ§ͺ Health Testing & Quarantine

Protecting the health of our tortoises is non-negotiable. All new arrivals follow strict intake and quarantine protocols, including veterinary exams, fecal testing, and PCR screening for serious infectious diseases.

Tortoises remain in quarantine until all results are received and cleared. This process protects both new intakes and long-term residents and ensures we never compromise the health of the sanctuary.

Ethical rescue takes time, space, and resources β€” but it is the only way to do this responsibly.

The care and love for the tortoises here is truly remarkable.

A tortoise is walking on a textured, light-brown surface made of stone or tile. The tortoise's shell is dark brown with lighter brown patterns. In the background, there are shells and a piece of driftwood, partially blurred, set against a green grassy area.

I was amazed by the dedication of the staff towards the tortoises. It's a wonderful place for these animals.

A large tortoise with a textured, domed shell is resting on the ground. Its legs have thick, scaly patterns, and it is surrounded by sparse grass and small, colorful twigs.
