Caring for Abandoned Redfoot Tortoises

Torts R Us is a Florida-based, 501(c)(3) nonprofit Redfoot Tortoise Sanctuary dedicated to rescue, education, and lifelong care.
We provide a safe haven for Redfoot tortoises that are abandoned, surrendered, or in need of specialized care, while educating the public on responsible ownership and proper husbandry.

πŸ’” They Didn’t Ask for This β€” But They’ve Found Safety Here

Many of the Redfoot tortoises in our care were abandoned, neglected, or surrendered after years without proper husbandry. These animals require specialized heat, humidity, diet, and medical oversight β€” needs that are often misunderstood or overlooked.

At Torts R Us, we provide what they were missing: safety, consistency, and lifelong care. Every tortoise receives individualized attention, proper nutrition, health monitoring, and a permanent place where they are respected and protected.

With your support, we are able to answer urgent rescue calls, provide veterinary care, and give these gentle animals the life they deserve.

🐒 Right Now - Here in the Sanctuary...

Torts R Us is an active, working sanctuary β€” not a static rescue. At any given time, we are caring for Redfoot tortoises at every life stage, from newly hatched babies to full-grown adults.

Our current population includes hatchlings, babies, juveniles, sub-adults, and adult tortoises, along with new intakes in quarantine awaiting veterinary clearance. Emergency rescue and surrender calls continue to increase each week, often involving animals in urgent condition.

Every intake requires immediate heat, humidity control, specialized diet, medical evaluation, and dedicated space β€” resources that must be available the moment a tortoise arrive

🐒 Our Current Sanctuary Population

We currently provide care for:

  • 3 newly hatched Redfoot tortoises

  • 11 babies receiving early developmental care

  • 1 surrendered 8-month-old juvenile

  • 3 juveniles

  • 4 sub-adults

  • 14 adult Redfoot tortoises

In addition, some tortoises remain in quarantine as part of our intake process, including recent arrivals that have already been examined by a veterinarian and are awaiting PCR test results before joining the sanctuary population.

Each tortoise is cared for based on age, size, and health needs to ensure the safest possible environment for everyone in our care.

.

πŸ§ͺ Health Testing & Quarantine

Protecting the health of our tortoises is non-negotiable. All new arrivals follow strict intake and quarantine protocols, including veterinary exams, fecal testing, and PCR screening for serious infectious diseases.

Tortoises remain in quarantine until all results are received and cleared. This process protects both new intakes and long-term residents and ensures we never compromise the health of the sanctuary.

Ethical rescue takes time, space, and resources β€” but it is the only way to do this responsibly.

The care and love for the tortoises here is truly remarkable.

A tortoise is walking on a textured, light-brown surface made of stone or tile. The tortoise's shell is dark brown with lighter brown patterns. In the background, there are shells and a piece of driftwood, partially blurred, set against a green grassy area.

I was amazed by the dedication of the staff towards the tortoises. It's a wonderful place for these animals.

A large tortoise with a textured, domed shell is resting on the ground. Its legs have thick, scaly patterns, and it is surrounded by sparse grass and small, colorful twigs.
